Introduction
As per their site, "Joplin is an open source note-taking app. Capture your thoughts and securely access them from any device".
Looking at the site, I see they have their own Joplin cloud service. That service has 'Basic', 'Pro' and 'Teams' packages. I am sure they have their own merits.
I, myself, have my own self-hosted Joplin server, installed via Docker Compose. That Joplin Docker Compose seems to be one of the few that I have had up and running and haven't had any bother from at all.
Once the Joplin server was up and running, I installed the Joplin app on my Windows 11 set-up, my Linux Mint set-up, my Android phone, my Amazon Fire tablet and my old, but reliable Google Pixel C.
I'll admit, I had to dedicate a morning to understand how the app works, but the learning curve was easy to overcome.
I use it the same way as I previously used Google Keep, but I like it much more. I'm not sure what the Apple IOS equivalent is, but I am sure they have one similar. The Joplin interface is much cleaner than Google Keep. The synchronisation between all my devices is almost instant. The customisation of notes and icons is easy, and for want of a better word, fun to mess around with.
Joplin seems to take every type of note you can throw at it. Although I write a note in 'Markdown' (I have no idea, but it seems very easy to learn), you can change to a text format. You can note photos, pdfs, code, audio, video (haven't tried the last two yet), etc.
I never sorted my notes on Google Keep. You can probably do it, but I just didn't dedicate the time to learning how. For me, it is just another app from Google that has its uses, but you just forget about it and end up writing notes in Whatsapp instead.
It looks from the image below that I don't use it much. I do. I delete the notes that are no longer relevant, something I never did with Google Keep.
Joplin is a Docker app that I definitely use on a daily basis.
